2007 Holiday Series - Race 2
Saturday, 5 January 2008
This week's Griffith Joggers run favoured the bigger handicap runners, given the warm weather and the longer distance, in contrast to the gift to the early starters last week.
With a figure eight course there were a few long course runners wrestling with the temptation to stop after the first lap and record a dnf, or continue the torture into the second lap.
Despite the heat and lack of official competition there was still a surprising amount of racing going on, very antisocial running, and a few dnf's.
Tarek Heiland ran at the only speed he knows to drop his group at the start line and overtake the entire field for an easy first place in a quick 25:40 for the approximate 6.5km.
Second went to Stewart Wood who is supposed to be in recovery mode but didn't look like it, while third was Paul Muir who has been quite rash recently.
Adam Johnson and Ben Potroz pushed the envelope to be fourth and fifth, while the rest of the field were happy just to finish in any time.
Chris Palmer failed to finish in his first outing for the season, making an illegal short cut, so is still to get a run on the board, while Ben Forner pulled up early with a 'mechanical', a rare occurrence for him.
There was plenty of competitive spirit on the short course as Macushla Josling hit the front early and stayed away for a clear win, the start of an all girl day on the podium.
Josling is a regular on the hill as a spectator, but stepped up to the start line this week and showed she is older and fitter and faster than her last outing.
Meg Signor and Sarah Keenan decided to drop their male companions but still managed to chat between themselves all the way to get a friendly equal second at the line with the fastest time of the day of 13:57 for the 3.1km.
Behind them Hannah Dodd and Regina Linnegar, in her first outing with the ferals, added to the women's honour and Glen Rosato at sixth lead the men home.
The Wardle Waddle tally has passed the fifty kilometres and the leading group has been reduced to an elite containing the famous names of past winners and challengers - Glenys Greenaway, David Slattery, Janet Mazzarolo, Ian Forrest, Dom Calabria, John Dodd, Graeme Lyons, Lena Sergi - but with one surprise outsider being John Keenan. Is he on a mission this year?
The Holiday Series are designed to be less competitive and distances will vary depending on the weather conditions of the day, runners setting off in two minute groupings for the long course.
All runners must make sure they have had plenty of fluid right through the day of the run, and should take it easy on the course, walking if necessary, and younger or less experienced runners are encouraged to stay home in extreme heat.
