2010 Winter Competition - Race 3
Saturday, 24 April 2010
Griffith Joggers faced the wet weather on Saturday but gone are the days when turning up in the wet was a shoe in for a top ten placing, as seventy two starters fronted the line and the competition was fierce.
Most of the field wildly slashed their previous best times thanks to the 'perfect storm' of conditions. The cool and wet weather works a treat on a runner's lungs, the fast and flat course along the bike track is ideal compared with rock jumping, and there is an extra incentive to go harder on and out and back course where you see the rest of the field at the turnaround.
So despite the course being 400 metres longer than the regular course, times were lowered by minutes rather than seconds, with first past the post Jason Rosenow a whopping five minutes quicker.
Rosenow is still a fresher to the hill run so can be a little up and down – top placing in race one, very down last week at near last but on top again this week, and he has retaken the lead in the pointscore after three of the nine races.
Maree Licastro got another top ten placing at fifth to stay highly placed in the pointscore, relinquishing top spot by the merest of margins despite running two minutes faster.
Many runners also ran two to three minutes quicker including Gary Workman at second who is also a fresh star on the rise, Keith McDonald at third who is a veteran and apparently motivated this week so close to home, young Joshua Keenan at fourth is fit at the end of the soccer season, and Patrizia Zandona, Maria Sergi, Arun Tiwari and Rita Fascianelli made it almost a perfect result for the first half of the start list.
Jayson Heffer was the only runner off the second half of the start list to slip into the placings at tenth, the others perhaps psyched out by the performance of the early starters by the turnaround.
Fastest times went to Adam Johnson with 25.02 and Teresa Burgess with 26.50 for the 6.4km
The short course story played out the same as some runners, junior and adult alike, were a massive five to eight minutes faster than the previous two weeks thanks to the conditions and the breath of extra motivation it brings.
Huw Tomlinson lead the field home and took no pity on the juniors to win by over a minute in a time of 14:48, and Claire Keenan and Isabelle Wood at second and third had a red hot go this week.
Louise Hancock at seventh was fastest on the day with 14:19 for the 3.2km.
The Joggers run from the green water tower each Saturday at 4:30pm with a current choice of 3km or 6km on the tracks and trails of the hill.
